“Having read and enjoyed Stieg Larsson’s The Millenium trilogy, I was intrigued by an email asking for a review of Swenden’s #1 non-crime writer, Kajsa Ingemarsson. Yesterday’s News sounded like the antithesis of Stieg Larsson’s work (I believe it is classified as contemporary women’s fiction) and, intrigued by the summary, I happily accepted the book for review….”

“Gerhardsen brings a timely perspective to the serial killer genre, as her characters are engulfed by the worst possible consequences of their childhood cruelties. The pages turn themselves, right up the final startling twist.”

Review of Yesterday’s News by Kajsa Ingemarsson
It’s always uplifting when you run into the bloggers that really do add value to the literay field of critique…
“This is very much a “visiting book,” a contemporary where you go and visit with the characters and nothing horrifically cataclysmic happens to everyone. There’s moments of triumph and total disappointment, and yet I liked Agnes enough to keep reading, even at times when I was more interested in her world than in her as a character. She’s not the strongest personality in the bunch, and there are times she’s cruel and I want to kick her…”

“Good lord, this book is the epitome of why I LOVE Nordic Noir. This book was fantastic. It was twisted and engrossing with its’ scenes and character development. I loved how deep and dark the author went in describing the characters, particularly the killer.”

““A serial murderer? You’re out of your mind! How many of those have there been in Sweden?” While this naïve Swedish detective in Carin Gerhardsen’s The Gingerbread House might win his debate on a technicality (or whatever you want to call reality), he obviously doesn’t read crime fiction. Otherwise he’d know that Sweden is crawling with serial killers. Not just serial killers but one-off murderers, too. They’re everywhere. Stockholm. Ystad. Malmo. Gothenburg. Uppsala. Fjällbacka. It’s a good thing the Swedes have universal healthcare because their crime writers are maiming and killing the (fictional) citizenry by the boatload. But in real life? Not so much.”

It has been a very interesting BookExpo here in New York – lots of contacts and lots of insights from the Digital Book Conference. Among the reflections is that an e-reader is a surprisingly rare sight, a clear sign that the tablet is taking over as the primary reader for digital books.
Follow Stockholm Text over the next few months to see the results of other reflections!

“…Since I’ve always loved reading crime novels and on top of that take a great interest in solving problems – mathematical problems, crosswords, Sudoku and all that – I decided to give crime a try. But – very importantly – without giving up my philosophical ambitions and literary quality claims. I asked myself what’s significant for a good crime novel and what ingredients from the point of view of content that applies to me specifically. And then I started writing, and just in case, I wrote three books in order to convince the intended publisher of my productivity…”

This one is worth reading. I got the creeps just by reading the review…
“But the pervasive sense of unsettled anxiety is not all manufactured, for in fact, these residents are each being observed. Anders’s secret smoking habit is watched and judged from eyes inside the hospital. Outside Erika’s artist’s cottage with its charming hammock, she feels the need to turn away when speaking on the phone so neighbor Sara won’t overhear. Linn is tormented by a face she sees peeking through her window and can’t rest while listening for noises of her neighbors in the garden.”
